Overview

Fillers are defined as injectable substances that can be used to plump up or “fill” an area of the face or body. Soft tissue fillers such as Restylane ™, Juviderm ™, and Belotero™ are made of synthetic proteins which can be used to “fill” deep wrinkles and areas of the face that have lost volume. Hylauronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies. Synthetic forms, such as the products listed above, can be injected to augment the face and soften wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid (HA) and fat are the two most commonly used fillers each offering different advantages. HAs come ready to inject out of a box, can be easily injected into wrinkles, folds, and areas of flattening, and can provide effects of up to roughly nine months. Injection of lipoaspirate (fat) requires an incision near the area to be harvested (abdomen or hips) and removal of fat, which is then processed, and then injected into the face. The effects of fat can be permanent, however, we can not determine how much of the fat will remain after injection due to resorption. For this reason, additional treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired results.
