What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty surgery reshapes your nose to create the facial appearance you desire. The most common reasons patients seek rhinoplasty are for either previous injuries, or for large or misshapen noses. Additionally, bumps on the nose can be reduced, the nasal bridge narrowed or widened, and the tip can be finely sculpted and elevated. Dr. Reitzen’s utilization of modern rhinoplasty techniques are aimed at fine-tuning your existing features, rather than creating an overdone or “turned-up” look. The procedure itself lasts 2-3 hours and patients recover in about 1 week. The procedure itself lasts 2-3 hours and recovery is relatively painless. Rhinoplasty may also be combined with septal surgery to improve your ability to breathe through your nose.

Secondary (revision) rhinoplasty is a term used to define a surgical revision of a previous rhinoplasty procedure. These procedures involve techniques similar to nasal reconstruction where cartilage support may be added during the revision, rather than taken away. These secondary procedures are more difficult given the presence of scar tissue and the weakened cartilaginous frame. Rib or ear cartilage may be needed to help achieve your desired outcome.

Preparation for Rhinoplasty Surgery

Two weeks prior to your rhinoplasty procedure, you will need to stop smoking and avoid taking aspirin/anti-inflammatory drugs or herbal supplements. Dr. Reitzen will also advise if you need any lab tests done or if any current medications need to be adjusted.

During Surgery

Surgery typically takes 2 to 3 hours and is an out-patient procedure. General anesthesia will be administered, the incision will be made and Dr. Reitzen will reshape your nose using either the open rhinoplasty method or closed rhinoplasty method.

The most common type of rhinoplasty surgery is open rhinoplasty. This is when an incision is made between and within your nostrils, which is typically needed for significant reshaping of the nose. Whereas in closed rhinoplasty, an incision is made only within your nostrils. This method is typically used for patients needing only minor changes to their nose.

Septal surgery can also be performed during the procedure if necessary.

Following the reshaping of the nose, the incision will be closed with dissolvable stitches.

Recovery After Surgery

Following your surgery, you’ll receive detailed care instructions concerning diet, which medications to avoid and which activities to avoid. This will help you have a comfortable, successful recovery.

Some patients experience bruising that lasts for up to two weeks. You will need to wear a bandage and splint for up to seven days.

Follow-up appointments will be scheduled and Dr. Reitzen can answer any questions you might have regarding your recovery.

Rest is very important in the weeks following your surgery. Only light activity should be performed, and when sleeping you should elevate your head using two or three pillows.

Rhinoplasty Cost

The cost of a rhinoplasty procedure is specific to each individual and depends on the changes that need to be made. Insurance policies do not typically cover the procedure, however, a portion of the surgery could be covered if there is a functional aspect (such as difficulty breathing).

How do you know if you should get a nose job?

Patients decide to get a nose job for a variety of reasons. Some have a crooked nose, overly large nose, or a bump they would like removed. Others want to enhance their appearance and some individuals have difficulty breathing.

A rhinoplasty procedure can help with all of the above reasons, giving patients a functional nose with a beautiful appearance.

Can I brush my teeth after rhinoplasty?

Yes, you can brush your teeth after rhinoplasty, but make sure to brush them gently.

Can you ruin your rhinoplasty?

Will smiling affect rhinoplasty?

Smiling will not affect your rhinoplasty procedure. You can still smile and laugh following the surgery.

Why does my nose look bigger after rhinoplasty?

After a rhinoplasty procedure, it’s very common for patients to have swelling on the nose – This is completely normal and indicates the nose is healing.

How can I make my nose job heal faster?

A nose job is likely to heal more quickly when patients focus on rest, use a cold compress to reduce swelling throughout the day, keep their head elevated above their heart, avoid strenuous activities, eat a healthy diet, and avoid blowing their nose.

Can I wash my hair after rhinoplasty?

As long as you keep your head elevated above your heart the entire time, you can wash your hair the day after your rhinoplasty procedure.

Does a nose job last forever?

Yes, your nose job will last the duration of your lifetime. However, similar to all other parts of your body, your nose will naturally change over time as you age.

When can you fly after rhinoplasty?

It’s important to wait at least two weeks after your surgery before beginning to fly again.

Most patients report having mild discomfort following their rhinoplasty. This is mostly due to feeling congested, typically for the first 24 hours.

What is the best age for a nose job?

It is recommended that rhinoplasty be performed after a patient finishes growing (typically age 16 in a female and age 18 in a male). Age is otherwise not a factor. Dr. Reitzen will discuss your full medical history to determine if rhinoplasty is a good fit for you.

Most patients can begin aerobic activity after 2 weeks when the bones have healed.

How safe is a nose job?

A rhinoplasty procedure is extremely safe with Dr. Reitzen, a leading rhinoplasty surgeon in Tribeca. Every procedure is performed using general anesthesia. Additionally, each patient who has the surgery will need to be in good health (which contributes to the overall safety of the nose job).

What are the risks of a nose job?

Similar to any major surgery, there are risks involved with rhinoplasty, which include bleeding, infection, a reaction to the anesthesia, difficulty breathing through your nose, permanent numbness around your nose, long-lasting pain or discoloration, and the possibility of additional surgery.

While these risks rarely occur in patients, Dr. Reitzen will fully explain the risks involved prior to your procedure.

How long after rhinoplasty can I exercise?

Patients can begin taking short walks the day after their surgery. After two weeks, many patients are able to resume aerobic activity. However, Dr. Reitzen will inform you when it is safe to increase your level of exercise and walking distance.

Why do nose jobs collapse?

When your nasal valve collapses, this can be the result of normal growth, inflammation, swollen tissue, or scar tissue. In the rare instance when this occurs, nasal valve repair surgery is needed to open your nasal passages.

The bones heal and the majority of swelling improves within approximately 6 weeks after your rhinoplasty. However, full healing takes approximately 5 to 6 months.
